ESL Writing: Formal Essays

Here are some formal writing assignments that you can use to help your students write more formal, lengthy assignments. I've also included some outlines and worksheets to help guide them through the writing process.

Beginner/Intermediate:

My Hobby - This is a sample essay about my hobby. Students can use this as a model to write about their own hobbies.

Advanced:

"Advertising Campaigns" - After teaching a section on advertising campaigns (using vocabulary like global, campaign, effective, market) I made this handout, which can guide students to write an analysis of an advertising campaign of their choosing.

"Eye for an Eye" - An opinion essay on the death penalty / capital punishment.

"The Pollution Solution" - As a teacher in Taiwan, especially, this is a very relevant topic about which to write.

"Taking Risks" - What does it mean to take a risk, and how do you feel about certain risks?

Additional Resources:

5-Paragraph Essay Template - Here is a general outline that can be used to guide students through the process of writing an essay on any topic (with an introduction, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion).
