Am, Is, and Are are called “Be Verbs,” because they mean “to be.”

  • Right:   I am a girl.

 

  • Wrong: He be a boy. (x)
  • Right:   He is a boy.

 

  • Wrong: They be students. (x)
  • Right:   They are students.
